Internet Auto Award 2008: Europe has voted

The European audience has cast its vote: Over 300,000 internet users have again taken part in the elections for the Internet Auto Award 2008, Europe’s largest internet audience award of the automotive sector. The popular CAROLINA-trophy was awarded to the winners by AutoScout24 during a festive gala event at the Kesselhaus in Munich on October 9th. The "Most Popular Car in Europe" is the Audi R8; the super sports car prevailed as the winner of all classes in Germany, Belgium, France, Spain and the Netherlands. The special prize for the "Best Innovation" was awarded to BMW, and the prize for the "Best Environmental Initiative" went to Tesla Motors, a California-based company.

AutoScout24 has called internet users to the polls for the seventh time to elect the winners of the Internet Auto Award – for the second time on a Europe-wide basis. Just like last year, Audi triumphed in six categories. The carmaker from Ingolstadt took six of the coveted CAROLINAs home for the A3 (compact car), A4 (medium sized car), A6 (top-end medium sized cars), A8 (luxury class cars), and for the R8 (sports cars & coupés) who dominated their classes. Surprisingly enough, it was not a volume model which distinguished itself as the "Most Popular Car in Europe", but rather the Audi R8, a 400 hp luxury vehicle, – the internet users obviously value classy sports cars highly. And there was yet another surprise in store in the small cars category: The MINI, as the long-standing “top dog” in this category, came in second, replaced by its new competitor from Italy, the Fiat 500. In the convertibles category, the roadster-icon Mercedes SL made its way directly to the front rank. The top placement in the vans & compact vans class was again conferred to Volkswagen for the Touran, as it had also been in the previous year. The sports car manufacturer Porsche was pleased about receiving a CAROLINA in the Offroad & SUV category for the Cayenne.

The AutoScout24 editorial team elected the "Best Innovation" and the "Best Environmental Initiative"

The special prize for the "Best Innovation" went to BMW for its "Dynamic Performance Control". The revolutionary rear-axle differential in the new X6 not only increases agility and dynamic performance of the vehicle, but also enhances safety at the physical limits. For the first time the editors of the AutoScout24 Magazine have awarded a special prize for the "Best Environmental Initiative". This prize was taken home by the Californian car manufacturer Tesla Motors with its roadster – the AutoScout24 editorial staff regards this high-performance electric car as a milestone in the development of alternative drive technologies.

The internet users have been electing the most popular vehicles at Europe's largest online audience award since 2002. This year for the second time, the election was conducted in several languages at www.internetautoward.be/.de/.es/.fr/.it/.nl. More than 300,000 internet users have cast their votes in August and September of 2008. 154 vehicles from nine categories had been nominated. Additional prizes were awarded for the "Most Popular Car in Europe", for the "Best Innovation", and for the "Best Environmental Initiative". The winners were honored with the CAROLINA - trophy, whose name stands for a modern word mixture of "car" and "online". As of now, all results can be found at: www.internetautoward.be/.de/.es/.fr/.it/.nl.
